Ah, road rage!
Often referred to as “Jaws with a truck”, Duel’s straight forward plot of a man (David Mann) being terrorized by a decreped 1955 Peterbilt 281, for no reason and without mercy, while trying simply to cross the desert in his 1971 Plymouth Valiant could be seen as a simplistic horror romp, but I like to look at it as a comment on modern complacency. Yes, Mann should have been able to simply go from point A (overbearing, emasculating wife) to point B (unfulfilling, nondescript job) without questioning his happiness and place in the world, but maybe what he (and we) really needs is to be pulled from the illusion of comfort, chased ruthlessly by “the most bizarre murder weapon ever”, be made to take a stand. and therein, discover our self worth and become truly alive.
Of course I am a huge horror fan, and love among others, Deliverence and Funny Games (german horror film that will make you question your own voyerism as a movie goer for watching this poor family terrorized with no rhyme or reason…seriously), so maybe the film’s tag line does just say it all…
Curious about ALL of the cars in the film.Check them out here, on the IMCDB, an unbelievable resource for car junkies.
