I was 10 years old when my father – Mike Marvin – Directed the 1986 sci-fi horror film ‘The Wraith’. He didn’t know me at the time – i was the product of of a one night stand he’d had with my mom. When i saw the movie – my mother told me that the director of the film was my father and that i should seek him out. I did that and we had a long conversation about the wraith. the following is an interview i did with him in 1986 when i was 10 years old for the school newspaper:
RT: So – the film the wraith has a fast car in it and it seems like its kind of a ghost – did you get to drive it and was it really fast?
MM: The car was just a super stylish regular old car with a futuristic look built by Hollywood prop designers. there is no such thing as ghosts. Listen kid is this going to take long?
RT: Dad…
MM: Please – call me Mr. Marvin
RT: Mr. Marvin dad, what was it like to do a film with Charlie Sheen after he died – i saw him in that movie where the Russians invade a school and he seemed really cool and then in Ferris Buelers Day Off and then in this film – was he a good driver?
MM: Listen kid – the guy’s a junkie – a dope fiend – he’s no good for nothing – i mean christ – the amount of times i caught him huffing the nitris oxide from all the tanks laying around the set – i thought the kid’s brain would freeze – probably will by 2009 – i like his brother – Emilio a lot better – but then again – its only work.
RT: I like the scene in the film where the bad guy got what was coming to him.
MM: (laughs) yeah…. THAT scene… because the rest of the movie was not one LONG ONE OF THOSE SCENES… kid… do you know what a hangover is?
RT: (omitted)
MM: (omitted) (omitted) (omitted) YOURSELF!
RT: I heard that a lot of action happened in the backseat of that car in the film – what does that mean?
MM: It means that you’ll have another bastard sibling in about 9 months with all the tail a director gets on the set of a big time Hollywood movie – just tell them they’ll be famous kiddo – they’ll do whatever you ask them to…. women.
RT: What would you like to be when you get older?
MM: hey kid listen – i am a big time Hollywood director – if i wanted to BE anything else – i’d have stayed with your white trash mother and drank myself to death – this is the life for me – i’m banging all sorts of high class hookers like you’ve never seen – LA hookers! If you want – i can introduce you to some people – i appreciate you coming to find me but i’d prefer if you sort of stayed away – The Wraith is as close to Citizen Kane as any director in this city has ever made – when you make a movie as good as this one – you come back to me and i’ll hire you to be my kid – until then – can you please just get lost?
RT: In closing is there anything you’d like to tell the people in my class?
MM: girls… spread them as far as you can – boys… always keep it greased up and ready to plunder (laughs… coughs… throws back some sort of pill)
RT: well thank you for your time dad – maybe i can see you again next time mom works 3 overnight shifts at the drive-thru to afford my ticket out to LA again
MM: Just send me the money next time kid – its worth alot more…
It was after this meeting with my father that i decided to go into filmmaking – i hope to someday fly back and have a drink with him and talk about our projects – father and son – just like Martin and Charlie Sheen.
