Smokey & the Bandit (1977)

Tuesday, April 19th 9pm

Otto’s Shrunken Head

538 E. 14th street (A & B)

Time to take to the road, for a quiet little drive in the country…or not.

Before Sally Field was everyone’s generic grandmother in those awful Boniva commercials, she was genuine bona-fide whacking-fodder. If you’ve got some vague recollection of that or you’re wondering what she did between Gidget and 2011, you owe it to yourself to check out Smokey & The Bandit.

Bandit: Well, go girl, go!
Carrie: [She is driving] I’m goin’ I’m goin! I got the metal to the petal and the thing to the floor!

The film also stars a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am and Burt Reynold’s mustache. It’s worth noting that neither of those are ironic, but it somehow works in this film because it was shot in Seventies-vision, which automatically makes everything cool. Jackie Gleason also had a key role in the film.

Give me a diablo sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it quick, I’m in a god-damn hurry.

In his biography, he reminisced about it fondly: “Ah yes, that was back when I was funny” he recalled. Anyway, you should come down and see the movie, because you either haven’t seen it in a while and you always leave it on when it comes on TBS, or you’ve never seen it, and you need to know it for the pop culture references you’re missing.
