While there’s never a dull day over at Motorgrrl, we’re taking a moment from service, storage and sales this month to collaborate with photographer Geoff Barrenger to shoot the First Annual MotorGrrl Calendar. Featuring not scantily clad, tank huggers, but real Motor Grrls rocking their own rides.

Are they girls or devils?!

See you at the movie!
Opening with a biker funeral. Casket adorned with booze, bras and assorted weaponry we meet, The Hellcats! The leader, Big Daddy’s been snuffed, but little do his loyal crew know that he was actually pal’ed up with the cops and was set to snitch on their drug running ways, had he not been killed and buried an outlaw hero first.
Smuggling drugs in from Mexico for the mafia, these cats are into some serious stuff. When Detective Chapman starts making life ‘tight’, the mob ‘loosens things up’ with a hit, and Chapman gets whacked.
Chapman’s fiance Linda, also a Narc is crushed. With the help of her would be brother in law Monte, just back from Vietnam, they infiltrate the gang set on bringing down the drug ring and avenging Chapman’s wrongful slaying.
Shenanigans abound. Beer swilling, pill popping, campfire shimmying…drag racing, nose busting, gang members being tied to trikes and dragged around in the dirt…you know. The usual.
Of course during the undercover mission, while digging for information on the next big score, Monte falls for Big Daddy, now Snakes’ old lady Shiela. Between that, kidnappings, smack withdrawal, and of course the revenge mission things get pretty hectic.
This classic 60’s biker cult film is not an out and out girl gang flick like Mini-Skirt Mob (1968), Bury Me An Angel (1972), or Girl On A Motorcycle (1968), but the interesting thing is that the only members of the gang that wear Hellcats colors, are the girls. They ride their own bikes (an rarity for most of these flicks) and they seem to be running the drug snuggling operation, while the boys get wasted.
There’s also a paperback novel of the same name, written by the film’s director and released the same year. On tracking a copy down, I’ll be back to report whether this tale was originally conceived with a heavier emphasis on The Hellcats being female, drug running biker outlaws. Until then, it’s an odd little film well worth the watch, if only for the trike dragging. Enjoy!
